Our philosophy

The United States turned 250 this year. Fundamental sectors haven’t kept up.

Most of what government does for you happens at the local level. It is where you get a permit, report a broken streetlight, or ask what you are allowed to build. For most people, the city is the only part of government they deal with in person.

There is no reason for paperwork to back up. Much of the work in a city office is repetitive: checking that a form is complete, asking for the missing page, answering the same question again. Agents can do that work, so staff spend their time on the decisions that need a person.

America builds. Local government deserves the same tools. We have always believed the way things are done can be done better. The tools to do that now exist.

City services should be as easy to complete as everything else on your phone. You can bank, shop, and book an appointment from your phone. Applying for a permit should work the same way: one conversation, a clear status, and fewer trips back to the counter.

Local government is where we start. Scaffold plans to bring agents into the core of many more fundamental sectors in the United States. We will earn that by getting this one right first.

If you work in a city or community that runs on forms and you would like to help us get this right, I would like to hear from you.
